James M. Gardiner was born October 24, 1792 in Newburgh, New York. He began studying medicine under Dr. Eleazar Gidney when he was 16. He received a diploma from the Medical Society of New York on October 4, 1813 and went into practice as a "physic and surgeon" in Newburgh. In 1826, Gardiner received his M.D. from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York.
