Collection Summary

Correspondence of a Virginia family including letters from the grandfather (Solomon), the father (Samuel G.) and mother (Susan), the three sons (Abram M., Haller H., and Caspar C.), as well as the daughters and some cousins. The bulk of the letters concern the brothers. These contain data relating to their medical education at the Universities of Virginia and Pennsylvania, and Bellevue; their medical work during the Civil War; and their medical practice. There is also consultation correspondence with other physicians. The collection provides a social history of a family as well as reflecting changes in the practice of medicine during the 19th century.
