Collection Summary

Contains descriptions of work and living conditions at a number of the forts where Newgarden was stationed. One of the more fully described periods is his time at Ft. Sheridan, Ill, 1892-1894. Newgarden gives considerable description of his tour of duty at Fort Yates, ND, 1896-1898, in the Standing Rock Sioux reservation, observing and interacting with Sioux culture. His medical work with the Third Cavalry in Cuba during the Spanish-American War is extensively covered, as well as his bout with malaria. In the Philippines he describes a cholera outbreak near Manila and tending to guerilla casualties. Running throughout the narrative are accounts of attending to wounded soldiers and civilians.
