Biographical Note

Dr. Small's work in chemistry was principally in the morphine alkaloid area. From 1929-1939 Small was with the Drug Addiction Laboratory, University of Virginia. In 1939 he moved to the National Institute of Health.

Material is chiefly from the 1930's. Among the correspondents are H. J. Anslinger, Alfred Burger, Nathan B. Eddy, Arthur B. Lamb, and William Charles White. Commercial firms represented are Abbott Laboratories, American Instrument Company, E. R. Squibb, Mallinckrodt Chemical Works, and Merck. Includes correspondence with the Anti-Opium Bureau of the League of Nations, and a laboratory notebook from Small's tenure at the Chemisches Laboratorium des Staates Munchen.
