Biographical Note

Born in Rehoboth, Rhode Island, Nathan Smith received his medical training at Harvard in 1790. He founded Dartmouth Medical School in 1797, where he remained as professor through 1808, though he continued to lecture there through 1815. When the Yale School of Medicine opened in 1813, Smith became one of the initial lecturers. From 1821 to 1825 he was a visiting lecturer at the newly formed Bowdoin College medical school. Dr. Smith also aided in the founding of the University of Vermont's medical school in 1821.

Collection Summary

Consists of notes on Smith's medical lectures, 1814-1815, as taken by David Shelton Edwards. Lecture topics include Of Diseased Action Generally, The Nervous System, Diseases of the Sanguiniferous System, Diseases of the Absorbent System, Diseases of the Cellular Substance, and Diseases of Organs. Early notes are on chemistry and "ancient compounds."
