Historical Note

The Surgeon General established the U.S.A. Typhus Commission in November 1942. It had three purposes: research, prevention, and care of the sick in North Africa and Europe where war-caused conditions encouraged epidemic typhus outbreaks. Dr. Stanhope Bayne-Jones played a prominent role in formulating the plans which established the Typhus Commission. He carried most of the responsibility for the organization and administration of the Commission, first unofficially, later as a member, and finally as director.
