The Central Surgical Association (CSA) was originally organized by Dr. Roy D. McClure in 1940 in order to provide surgeons in the central states and Canada with a regional professional organization. The archives contain original documents, correspondence, proceedings, minutes, programs, photographs, membership information, and published material by members of the group.

Charles F. Whitten Papers
Dr. Whitten's primary research centered on sickle cell anemia. He published several studies and worked to expand awareness and promote education about the disease. Dr. Whitten was instrumental in the foundation, in 1971, of the National Association for Sickle Cell Disease as well as the opening of the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at Wayne State University. Dr. Charles Gell's chief contributions to aviation medicine dealt with the hazards of cosmic rays in space flight, the development of methods for quick freezing of mammals, and the problems of accelleration stress in flight.

Charles R. Greenleaf Papers
Greenleaf was born in Pennsylvania and educated at the Medical College of Ohio, graduating in 1860. During the Civil War, he oversaw construction of Philadelphia's Mower Hospital on Chestnut Hill, which was at the time the largest military hospital in the world. He introduced a system of personal identification used by the army and organized the army's Hospital Corps.
